Milk - Wikipedia. This article is about the fluid produced by the mammary glands of mammals. For milk derived from plants, see Plant milk. For other uses of the word, see Milk (disambiguation). Milk is a white liquid produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It is the primary source of nutrition for infant mammals (including humans who breastfeed) before they are able to digest other types of food. Early- lactation milk contains colostrum, which carries the mother's antibodies to its young and can reduce the risk of many diseases. It contains many other nutrients. Dairy farms produced about 7. Over 7. 50 million people live in dairy farming households. The early milk from mammals is called colostrum. Colostrum contains antibodies that provide protection to the newborn baby as well as nutrients and growth factors. This introduces the risk of the child developing electrolyte imbalances, metabolic acidosis, megaloblastic anemia, and a host of allergic reactions. Initially, the ability to digest milk was limited to children as adults did not produce lactase, an enzyme necessary for digesting the lactose in milk. Milk was therefore converted to curd, cheese and other products to reduce the levels of lactose. Thousands of years ago, a chance mutation spread in human populations in Europe that enabled the production of lactase in adulthood. This allowed milk to be used as a new source of nutrition which could sustain populations when other food sources failed. ![]() Modern industrial processes use milk to produce casein, whey protein, lactose, condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food- additives and industrial products. Whole milk, butter and cream have high levels of saturated fat. ![]() The enzyme needed to digest lactose, lactase, reaches its highest levels in the small intestine after birth and then begins a slow decline unless milk is consumed regularly. The largest producer and consumer of cattle and buffalo milk in the world is India. Spitting up, sometimes called physiological or uncomplicated reflux, is common in babies and is usually (but not always) normal. Most young babies spit up sometimes. Reactions to food. Foods can cause a wide variety of reactions in children. A food allergy can be life-threatening in some rare cases, but most reactions to food are. The correct name for such products are 'soy beverage', 'rice beverage', etc. Dairy relates to milk and milk production, e. Much of the argument is based on monotremes (egg- laying mammals). This development occurred independently in several places around the world from as early as 9. BC in Southwest Asia. Pastoral and pastoral nomadic economies, which rely predominantly or exclusively on domestic animals and their products rather than crop farming, were developed as European farmers moved into the Pontic- Caspian steppe in the fourth millennium BC, and subsequently spread across much of the Eurasian steppe. Milk consumption became common in these regions comparatively recently, as a consequence of European colonialism and political domination over much of the world in the last 5. In the Middle Ages, milk was called the . Individual railway firms began transporting milk from rural areas to London from the 1. Possibly the first such instance was in 1. St Thomas's Hospital in Southwark contracted with milk suppliers outside London to provide milk by rail. By 1. 90. 0, the company was transporting over 2. Over the last three decades of the 1. Legislation in 1. The proportion of rural imports by rail as a percentage of total milk consumption in London grew from under 5% in the 1. By that point, the supply system for milk was the most highly organized and integrated of any food product. Milk Allergy. Allergy to cow’s milk is the most common food allergy in infants and young children. Symptoms of a milk allergy reaction can range from mild, such as. ![]() ![]() ![]() The first company to do so may have been the New York Dairy Company in 1. The Express Dairy Company in England began glass bottle production in 1. In 1. 88. 4, Hervey Thatcher, an American inventor from New York, invented a glass milk bottle, called 'Thatcher's Common Sense Milk Jar', which was sealed with a waxed paper disk. Pasteurization was originally used as a way of preventing wine and beer from souring. Russia and China became self- sufficient and stopped importing milk. Canada has tried to restrict milk production by forcing new farmers/increased capacity to . Importing milk is prohibited. The European Union theoretically stopped subsidizing dairy farming in 2. Direct subsidies were replaced by . The United States has a voluntary insurance program that pays farmers depending upon the price of milk and the cost of feed. In 2. 01. 1, FAO estimates 8. Commercial dairy farming using automated milking equipment produces the vast majority of milk in developed countries. ![]() Dairy cattle such as the Holstein have been bred selectively for increased milk production. About 9. 0% of the dairy cows in the United States and 8. Great Britain are Holsteins. These animals include buffalo, goat, sheep, camel, donkey, horse, reindeer and yak. The first four respectively produced about 1. In turn, the opportunities presented by these growing markets have attracted investments by multinational dairy firms. Nevertheless, in many countries production remains on a small scale and presents significant opportunities for diversification of income sources by small farms. This survey over 2. ICAR (International Committee for Animal Recording. The survey found that the average herd size in these developed countries increased from 7. A dairy farm had an average of 1. Norway, and 3. 37 in New Zealand. Annual milk production in the same period increased from 7,7. The lowest average production was in New Zealand at 3,9. The milk yield per cow depended on production systems, nutrition of the cows, and only to a minor extent different genetic potential of the animals. What the cow ate made the most impact on the production obtained. New Zealand cows with the lowest yield per year grazed all year, in contrast to Israel with the highest yield where the cows ate in barns with an energy- rich mixed diet. The milk yield per cow in the United States, the world's largest cow milk producer, was 9,9. In contrast, the milk yields per cow in India and China – the second and third largest producers – were respectively 1,1. Particularly notable was the rapid increase of consumption of milk in China and the rise of the price of milk in the United States above the government subsidized price. The principal requirements are energy (lipids, lactose, and protein), biosynthesis of non- essential amino acids supplied by proteins (essential amino acids and amino groups), essential fatty acids, vitamins and inorganic elements, and water. Milk from other bovines and non- bovine mammals varies in composition, but has a similar p. H. Lipids. Initially milk fat is secreted in the form of a fat globule surrounded by a membrane. These act as emulsifiers which keep the individual globules from coalescing and protect the contents of these globules from various enzymes in the fluid portion of the milk. Although 9. 7–9. 8% of lipids are triacylglycrols, small amounts of di- and monoacylglycerols, free cholesterol and cholesterol esters, free fatty acids, and phospholipids are also present. Unlike protein and carbohydrates, fat composition in milk varies widely in the composition due to genetic, lactational, and nutritional factor difference between different species. Diameter may also vary between animals within a species and at different times within a milking of a single animal. In unhomogenized cow's milk, the fat globules have an average diameter of two to four micrometers and with homogenization, average around 0. Total proteins in milk represent 3. Caseins. The largest structures in the fluid portion of the milk are . Each casein micelle is roughly spherical and about a tenth of a micrometer across. There are four different types of casein proteins: . ![]() Collectively, they make up around 7. Most of the casein proteins are bound into the micelles. There are several competing theories regarding the precise structure of the micelles, but they share one important feature: the outermost layer consists of strands of one type of protein, k- casein, reaching out from the body of the micelle into the surrounding fluid. These kappa- casein molecules all have a negative electrical charge and therefore repel each other, keeping the micelles separated under normal conditions and in a stable colloidalsuspension in the water- based surrounding fluid. These other proteins are more water- soluble than caseins and do not form larger structures. Because the proteins remain suspended in whey remaining when caseins coagulate into curds, they are collectively known as whey proteins. Whey proteins make up approximately 2. Lactoglobulin is the most common whey protein by a large margin. Calcium, phosphate, magnesium, sodium, potassium, citrate, and chlorine are all included as minerals and they typically occur at concentration of 5–4. M. The milk salts strongly interact with casein, most notably calcium phosphate. It is present in excess and often, much greater excess of solubility of solid calcium phosphate. Vitamins A, B6, B1. C, D, K, E, thiamine, niacin, biotin, riboflavin, folates, and pantothenic acid are all present in milk. Calcium phosphate structure. For many years the most accepted theory of the structure of a micelle was that it was composed of spherical casein aggregates, called submicelles, that were held together by calcium phosphate linkages. However, there are two recent models of the casein micelle that refute the distinct micellular structures within the micelle. The first theory attributed to de Kruif and Holt, proposes that nanoclusters of calcium phosphate and the phosphopeptide fraction of beta- casein are the centerpiece to micellular structure. Specifically in this view, unstructured proteins organize around the calcium phosphate giving rise to their structure and thus no specific structure is formed. The second theory proposed by Horne, the growth of calcium phosphate nanoclusters begins the process of micelle formation but is limited by binding phosphopeptide loop regions of the caseins. Once bound, protein- protein interactions are formed and polymerization occurs, in which K- casein is used as an end cap, to form micelles with trapped calcium phosphate nanoclusters. Some sources indicate that the trapped calcium phosphate is in the form of Ca. No Milk Page: Books & Links. The No Milk Page: Books & Links. Lactose Maldigestion/Milk Allergy/Casein Intolerance. Super Foods To Naturally Cleanse Your Liver. Why does the liver need a detox? The reason behind detoxifying the liver emanates from a concern that over a period of time toxins are accumulating inside our bodies. Some toxins are pretty obvious; things like pesticides and other impurities in the atmosphere; some are by- products of processed foods, whilst other toxins are ones that are produced by our own bodies that have not been properly expelled. The problem, however, is that the nature of detox diets requires that you give up particular types of foods and once you’ve finished the detox diet, you then gradually begin to introduce them again, trying to avoid those that are not particularly healthy. Does detoxing really work? ![]() ![]() Although detox diets do tend to make people feel better, there is no actual proof that this is because the toxins have been expelled. It could be that the improvements are the result of what is no longer being consumed. The truth of the matter is that the majority of liver detox diets do not have any scientific facts behind them. The reduction in weight that is sometimes experienced is loss of fluid and/or muscle tone rather than fat, and is only a temporary. Once the diet is over, the weight usually begins to pile back on. It is also now being suggested that some long- term detox diets can actually cause harm, because you are denying your body certain nutritious foods and essential minerals. Don’t detox – create a natural detox diet. Thinking is now beginning to turn to the fact that eating a proper well balanced, healthy, nutritious diet is a better alternative to forced, crash detoxing. Brussels sprouts are a rich source of the mineral sulfur, and the antioxidant glucosinolate. Both of these substances encourage your liver in producing certain enzymes that can prevent damage caused by both dietary and environmental toxins. Cabbage facilitates your body’s production of ITCs (Isothiocyanates), another important substance that promotes the manufacture of detox enzymes. Citrus fruits, and particularly lemons and limes, contain boatloads of vitamin C. ![]() ![]() Kevin Gianni is a health author, activist and blogger. Toxic Waste Matter Builds Up in Your Intestines, Making You Sick. Below are pictures of the Uneliminated Waste Matter in the intestinal tract and colon of almost everyone in the western world. It forms over decades of eating – and even if you have adopted a healthier diet and lifestyle in the past few years, it is very likely you have some of this in you. Such uneliminated waste in your body is damaging to your health, to say the least. Do you know where you absorb 9. Through the small intestine. But if it’s clogged with the stuff you see above, you don’t get the nutrients from your food. That leaves your body feeling hungry, it it places more orders for nutrients that it is not getting, causing you to feel like eating even more food. It also means that you are not absorbing the nutrition from all those expensive supplements and super foods you have been eating, which is like flushing miracle foods and your money down the drain, literally. But that is not all. And if this waste matter is in your gut, it imbalances your brain chemistry, creating foggy thinking, depression, anxiety, lack of creativity, poor sleep. Your body will be given the tools, the energy, and the permission needed to let go of all that yuck in a SHORT period of time. The results? A happier brain and a body that is FAR more well nourished than before. This is about 1. 3% of all global deaths. This is not an accident. E. P. A., are used commercially. According to the Environmental Defense Group, more than 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released into the environment each year, of which 7. These cancer- causing agents end up in our air, our water, and our food. In other words, we are surrounded by carcinogens, and we have to use what we as human beings have used all along for survival: a certain amount of cleverness and thoughtfulness in our lives to counteract the lack of consciousness that the corporations and ourselves are living with. Different tests on the blood and urine of adult Americans have found a total of 1. Of these 1. 67 compounds, 7. In unborn babies, the Environmental Working Group has found a total of 2. Our future generations are explicitly at risk. Wouldn’t it be nice to find a simple, natural remedy that can act as a practical antidote for this situation? I think so, too, and that is why we are here. The Health Effects of Toxicty are Devastating. Mortality rates among the overweight and obese are telling: A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that being overweight increases the risk of death by 2. Obesity carries with it a multitude of increased risk factors : heart disease, depression, acid reflux, diabetes, dementia, arthritis, cancer, stroke, kidney disease, sexual dysfunction, and sleep disorders. With modern research data and its digital dissemination for all to read, the general debate is over on this one: Overweight is associated with numerous diseases, shortens life, and creates direct and associated economic costs: The U. S. Remember, most of our ill health arises from very similar underlying causes: stagnation, toxemia (drugs, food additives, agro and industrial chemicals, uneliminated waste matter in our bodies), and deficiency. Take arthritis for example. Chronic joint pain is incredibly common in the western world, yet most of it is caused by poor hydration, a lack of alkaline minerals in the body, and inflammatory dietary agents such as wheat, dairy, processed sugar, and GMOs. Or consider acid reflux disease, (which I had). This preventable condition is the reason over the counter antacids are a perennial top- seller for Big Pharma. This multi- billion dollar cash cow can be healed in as little as 7 Days of Juice Feasting by rebuilding the alkaline lining of the stomach and rehydrating the body. Stomach Acid is good for you. The weak stomach lining reacts to the presence of strong stomach acid. The key is not to diminish your natural production of strong stomach acid but to rebuild the alkaline stomach lining. The healing experienced from Juice Feasting on a myriad of western health challenges – such as those seen below – is just as dramatic. And it’s easy to see why once you understand how Juice Feasting is designed to remove the underlying causes of most major diseases to rebuild the body’s physiology, biochemistry, and immune system from bottom to top. If You Have These Symptoms, It’s Likely That Toxemia is Causing Your Declining Health. Sore Throat. Bloating. Gas. Constipation. Diarrhea. Ear Achefibromyalgia. It was after a very long and painful journey, and I want to share this story with you so you’ll understand exactly how I discovered Juice Feasting, and how it works. And yet, I grew up through the age of 1. Until mom asked me at the beginning of 7th grade, “Do you want to take your lunch to school, or get it in the cafeteria?”I was growing up. A man doesn’t take mom’s lunch to school—he gets it himself. Looking back on my report cards, that was the year it all went into the toilet. My mind became constipated, imbalanced, bereft. I remember putting teaspoons of sugar in my Coca- Cola. I developed acid reflux disease that year, and over the next twelve years – despite an active life of sports and eventually a vegetarian diet – my symptoms grew worse: stomach pain, irritability in the early morning, arthritis, hypoglycaemia, high blood sugar, and the need to sleep 1. I was in hell this way for three years after backpacking the 2,2. Applachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 1. I spent $5. 0,0. 00 on medical bills trying to figure out what was wrong – and was prescribed a whole host of pharmaceuticals ranging from antacids, pain killers, psychotropics, and over- the- counter medications. This was the medicine cabinet I used to manage symptoms before I learned how to the underlying causes of my health challenges with Juice Feasting. After just 1. 0 Days of Juice Feasting, I did not use ANY of these ever again. That was 1. 0 years ago. And heal I did. My intractable symptoms of 1. Manufacturers add some of these acids while others occur naturally in the beverages. Manufacturers use acids in carbonated drinks to give the beverages freshness and tartness specific to the drink. Manufacturers add carbonation to water by dissolving pressurized carbon dioxide gas in the water. This process causes the water to become effervescent and fizz. Manufacturers then use the carbonated water as an ingredient to make flavored carbonated drinks. During this process, carbonic acid forms in the water, giving carbonated water a p. H between 3 and 4. Because of the strength of this acid, manufacturers often add a base such as sodium bicarbonate to reduce the acidity and neutralize the water. Citric acid is a mild acid commonly associated with fruits and vegetables. ![]() ![]() Citrus fruits such as lemons and limes contain a high concentration of this acid. Citric acid also functions as a natural preservative used by manufacturers to add tartness to carbonated beverages. Many flavored carbonated beverages use citric acid to produce the right combination of sweetness and tartness in the finished beverage. Phosphoric acid is another acid commonly added by manufacturers to carbonated beverages. Phosphoric acid produces sharp flavors in the finished beverage. This acid also acts as an anti- fungal and antibacterial by slowing the growth of molds and bacteria. Without phosphoric acid, molds and bacteria would rapidly multiply within the beverage from the sugar content. The December 2. 00. The sugars in these beverages, however, can directly damage your teeth by causing plaque that leads to cavities, which may be more harmful than the carbonation. According to a study published in the 2. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” the phosphoric acid in carbonated beverages can, over time, prevent the body from absorbing calcium. This can damage your bones and teeth by reducing the bones’ density and potentially lead to osteoporosis, and preventing calcium from keeping bones strong. Soft drink - Wikipedia. A soft drink (see terminology for other names) is a drink that typically contains carbonated water, a sweetener, and a natural or artificial flavoring. In Tudor England 'water imperial' was widely drunk; it was a sweetened drink with lemon flavor and containing cream of tartar. The Compagnie des Limonadiers of Paris was granted a monopoly for the sale of lemonade soft drinks in 1. Vendors carried tanks of lemonade on their backs and dispensed cups of the soft drink to Parisians. In 1. 76. 7, Englishman Joseph Priestley first discovered a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide to make carbonated water. His invention of carbonated water (also known as soda water) is the major and defining component of most soft drinks. In 1. 77. 2, Priestley published a paper entitled Impregnating Water with Fixed Air in which he describes dripping oil of vitriol (or sulfuric acid as it is now called) onto chalk to produce carbon dioxide gas, and encouraging the gas to dissolve into an agitated bowl of water. Swedish chemist Torbern Bergman invented a generating apparatus that made carbonated water from chalk by the use of sulfuric acid. Bergman's apparatus allowed imitation mineral water to be produced in large amounts. Swedish chemist J. His recipe for 'Bewley's Mephitic Julep' consisted of 3 drachms of fossil alkali to a quart of water, and the manufacture had to 'throw in streams of fixed air until all the alkaline taste is destroyed'. He founded the Schweppes Company in Geneva in 1. His drink soon gained in popularity; among his new found patrons was Erasmus Darwin. In 1. 84. 3, Schweppes commercialised Malvern Water at the Holywell Spring in the Malvern Hills, and was appointed the official supplier to the Royal Family. The earliest reference to carbonated ginger beer is in a Practical Treatise on Brewing. The drinking of either natural or artificial mineral water was considered at the time to be a healthy practice, and was promoted by advocates of temperance. ![]() ![]() Pharmacists selling mineral waters began to add herbs and chemicals to unflavored mineral water. They used birch bark (see birch beer), dandelion, sarsaparilla, fruit extracts, and other substances. Flavorings were also added to improve the taste. Mass market and industrialization. By the 1. 84. 0s there were more than fifty soft drink manufacturers – an increase from just ten in the previous decade. For the Great Exhibition of 1. Schweppes was designated the official drink supplier and sold over a million bottles of lemonade, ginger beer, Seltzer water and soda- water. There was a Schweppes soda water fountain, situated directly at the entrance to the exhibition. Tonic water was originally quinine added to water as a prophylactic against malaria and was consumed by British officials stationed in the tropical areas of South Asia and Africa. As the quinine powder was so bitter people began mixing the powder with soda and sugar, and a basic tonic water was created. The first commercial tonic water was produced in 1. Carbonated drink bottles are under great pressure from the gas, so inventors tried to find the best way to prevent the carbon dioxide or bubbles from escaping. The bottles could also explode if the pressure was too great. Hiram Codd devised a patented bottling machine while working at a small mineral water works in the Caledonian Road, Islington, in London in 1. His Codd- neck bottle was designed to enclose a marble and a rubberwasher in the neck. The bottles were filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The bottle was pinched into a special shape to provide a chamber into which the marble was pushed to open the bottle. This prevented the marble from blocking the neck as the drink was poured. This was boosted further by a Trade Show held in London in the same year. By 1. 87. 4 the licence was free to bottle manufacturers as long as they purchased the marbles, sealing rings and used his groove tool, and the mineral water firms they traded with had already bought a licence to use his bottle. In 1. 89. 2, the . It was the first bottle top to successfully keep the bubbles in the bottle. In 1. 89. 9, the first patent was issued for a glass- blowing machine for the automatic production of glass bottles. Earlier glass bottles had all been hand- blown. Four years later, the new bottle- blowing machine was in operation. It was first operated by the inventor, Michael Owens, an employee of Libby Glass Company. Within a few years, glass bottle production increased from 1,4. In America, soda fountains were initially more popular, and many Americans would frequent the soda fountain daily. Beginning in 1. 80. Yale University chemistry professor Benjamin Silliman sold soda waters in New Haven, Connecticut. He used a Nooth apparatus to produce his waters. Businessmen in Philadelphia and New York City also began selling soda water in the early 1. In the 1. 83. 0s, John Matthews of New York City and John Lippincott of Philadelphia began manufacturing soda fountains. Both men were successful and built large factories for fabricating fountains. Vending machines also began to appear in the 1. Since then, soft drink vending machines have become increasingly popular. Both hot and cold drinks are sold in these self- service machines throughout the world. Production. The syrup- like concentrate lacks sugar and is sold to franchisees to refill. Soft drinks are made by mixing dry or fresh ingredients with water. Production of soft drinks can be done at factories or at home. Soft drinks can be made at home by mixing a syrup or dry ingredients with carbonated water, or by lacto- fermentation. Syrups are commercially sold by companies such as Soda- Club; dry ingredients are often sold in pouches, in a style of the popular U. S. Carbonated water is made using a soda siphon or a home carbonation system or by dropping dry ice into water. Drinks like ginger ale and root beer are often brewed using yeast to cause carbonation. Of most importance is that the ingredient meets the agreed specification on all major parameters. This is not only the functional parameter (in other words, the level of the major constituent), but the level of impurities, the microbiological status, and physical parameters such as color, particle size, etc. In some older preparations, this resulted from natural fermentation used to build the carbonation. In the United States, soft drinks (as well as other beverages such as non- alcoholic beer) are allowed by law to contain up to 0. Modern drinks introduce carbon dioxide for carbonation, but there is some speculation that alcohol might result from fermentation of sugars in a non- sterile environment. A small amount of alcohol is introduced in some soft drinks where alcohol is used in the preparation of the flavoring extracts such as vanilla extract. However a few major North American companies are present in most of the countries of the world, such as Pepsi and Coca Cola. Major North American producers other than the two previously- named companies include Cott, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, and Jones Soda. Health concerns. Other substances have negative health effects, but are present in such small quantities that they are unlikely to pose any substantial health risk provided that the beverages are consumed only in moderation. In 1. 99. 8, the Center for Science in the Public Interest published a report titled Liquid Candy: How Soft Drinks are Harming Americans' Health. The report examined statistics relating to the increase in soft drink consumption and claimed that consumption is . It also criticized marketing efforts by soft drink companies. If so, then the association between soft drink consumption and weight gain could reflect the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle rather than the consequences of consuming soft drinks. Experimental evidence is needed to definitively establish the causal role of soft drink consumption. Reviews of the experimental evidence suggest that soft drink consumption does cause weight gain. ![]() ![]() Fibonacci's Rabbits. Fibonacci rabbit. I’m talkin’ cookies, crackers, biscuits, cake mixes, pastas, breakfast cereals, anything. This is due to the fact that weevils lay their eggs in, you guessed it, grains. ![]() The two most common types of pantry weevils are the granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius) and the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae). They are often referred to as snout weevils. These little pantry pests are actually beetles; very small beetles that rarely get any larger than . Female weevils use their little snouts to drill holes in the casings of grains, such as wheat, oats, rye, rice, corn, barley, and various seeds and beans. Once the hole is drilled, she deposits an egg and seals the hole back up with a gelatinous glue- like substance that she creates all by her little self. The egg hatches after a few days, and the larvae uses its surroundings as a lunch box for about the next month. For this reason, it can be difficult to detect an infestation. Not only is it slow to start but the larvae are in hiding. Once grain weevils (a. A single female can lay up to 4. Found more commonly in cooler states. Best Methods of Weevil Control. Remove contaminated food products. Sounds like a no- brainer, but this might be the single most important step in getting rid of weevils. Look through your ENTIRE pantry and every single cupboard for any food products that might be contaminated. If you find something that you aren’t sure of, pitch it. There’s no point in risking reinfestation. It could very well cost you more money in the long run. Once you have it all gathered up, take it outside to the trash immediately and move the can as far away from your house as possible. Pull a Cinderella. Conduct the most thorough cleaning of your pantry and cupboards that you have ever done. Start by taking absolutely everything off the shelves and vacuuming them. Make sure to get all the cracks where flour or other food bits might be hiding. If you have contact paper lining the shelves, remove it (you can put new stuff on later). Use a rag and some hot sudsy water to do the rest of the cleaning. Kill weevils with cold. To avoid future problems with weevils, it is advisable to freeze your food. You can do this to flour, oats, cookies, corn meal, grits, whatever. If you have the space in your freezer, you should just keep the stuff in there full time. If you have a small freezer and can’t afford the space, set the freezer as cold as it gets and leave the food in there for at least four days. That will kill any eggs, larvae, or weevils. If you don’t feel like freezing everything, a little heat exposure will accomplish the same thing. Spread your food or seeds thinly on a baking sheet, preheat the oven to 1. If you’re impatient, you can do 1. If you want to use the microwave, spread the stuff on a glass dish or plate, and run it for 5 minutes. Keep in mind that if you are heating seeds for gardening, the heat may destroy the seed’s chances for germination. Also, don’t heat fine- grained things, like flour, in case of combustion. Further weevil prevention. Start by cleaning the cupboards and pantry regularly. If you spill something, clean it up immediately and thoroughly. In the pantry and cupboards, you may want to consider sealing any shelving cracks with caulk to keep food from getting trapped down there in the future. Buy your goods in smaller amounts that you can use quickly. Rotate your stock and don’t mix new food with old. Finally, store all of your perishables in tight- lidded glass, tin, steel, or plastic containers. If you have limited cupboard space, Rubbermaid modular containers (sold at Amazon) may be a good plan. Control Weevils with Pyrethrins. With as common a pantry pest as weevils are, you would think that there would be quite a number of pesticides that target them directly. Unfortunately, this is far from the case. The reason is simple: weevils live and breed in your food. Since you would like to eat that food, contaminating it with insecticides probably isn’t the best idea. For this reason, you should probably just stick with pyrethrins. There are quite a few different pyrethrin sprays and aerosols available that are sold to be used indoors and in food handling areas. You should still avoid spraying the food directly. Once your pantry and cupboards are completely empty, spray them down. I would recommend you leave the cupboards empty and open for at least a few hours before filling them back up. Look for products such as CB- 8. Extra, Riptide Waterbased Pyrethrin ULV, and Konk Too. Best Natural Weevil Control Methods. Bay leaves. Bay leaves are a natural weevil deterrent. After freezing or heating your grains, drop a bay leaf or two into the storage container on top of the food product you want protected. You may also wish to randomly scatter a few leaves around the cupboard or pantry. Amazon sells a bundle of ’em here. Cloves. Cloves are another natural deterrent for weevils. Treat your grains with cloves the same way you would with bay leaves. After treating your food with hot or cold, drop a clove on top of it before storing. Scatter a couple around the cupboards and pantry too. Hell, go crazy and try a couple of each. Matchbooks. Sounds odd, I know, but I read this suggestion in a number of places. Take a plain old matchbook, open it up, and set it in with your grains or pastas. Apparently the sulfur smell from the matches acts as a weevil deterrent. You must eat well to perform well and it was then that I realized the true value of good nutrition. If it wasn’t for boxing, I might have eaten junk food for the rest of my life. ![]() What is Mad Cow Disease? Mad Cow Disease is the common term for Bovine Spongiform Encepholopathy (BSE), a progressive neurological disorder of cattle which can be. Poor Dieting Habits of the Modern Lifestyle. I blame recent technology and modern society for creating busier lives and contributing to poor eating habits. It is more convenient, socially and personally rewarding to eat crap as we maintain busier lifestyles in school, work, or training. Time- crunched days often lead to frequent periods of starvation and over- eating. Diet conveniences come in the form of junk food or restaurants more focused on providing a “dining experience” than actual healthy food. The only thing most people know about healthy dieting is “fat is bad and avoid junk food” and yet the average person today eats more junk food and fat foods than ever before. Proper dieting has become quite the mystery over the years. I’m not sure how it came to be that we humans have lost our ability to eat intelligently, something we were born to do naturally. The way I see it, successful marketing has been repackaging the same facts about proper dieting over and over again to be resold to the poorly- informed (and overly self- conscious) public. ![]() I’ve heard of the protein diet, the atkins diet, the vegetarian diet, the high- carb diet, the low- carb diet, and the SLOW- carb diet. I’ve been a successful athlete my entire life without ever following any of those. At worst, these diets restrict your food intake to ridiculously small amounts. These crazy diets work for a little while, until your body suffers from starvation or deficiencies in essential nutrients. At best, these diets are simply a new name for a good old fashion healthy diet! I don’t need to reinvent the science of nutrition. The secret to eating right has more to do with common sense than all the science in the world! Dieting Common Sense: You need to eat everything. Carb, protein, fats — they’re all essential to your body; the key is moderation. You need to eat at the right time. Don’t starve when your body needs energy, and don’t over- eat when you have enough. Timing your meals allow you to stay full on less food. Your diet should fit your needs. Diets are not one- size- fits- all. Everyone’s bodies, lifestyles, diets, and dieting goals are different. A weight loss diet for one person might lead to weight gain for another. Healthy dieting requires: TIMING (of meals)VARIETY (of foods)BALANCE (of nutrients)MODERATION (of portions)The Boxing Diet. As a fighter, eating properly increases your performance, decreases your recovery time, while maintaining a lean (and sexy) body weight. Boxers need more nutrients than the average person to workout, develop and repair the body. A boxer’s diet must: provide energy for physical performanceprovide nutrients for rapid muscle developmentdecrease body fat. The boxing diet varies from a normal diet in that you have to center your diets around your workouts. You need nutrients to fuel the intense workout and begin recovery right after. Eating around the workout is what makes the boxer’s diet so hard. It’s easy to under- eat and end up starving during your workout or over- eat because you feel so hungry after the workout. It’s not enough to say that “an athlete requires more nutrition than the average person.” Managing the boxer’s diet is TRICKY! There’s timing, calculation, and balance involved! The boxer has to eat more, without over- eating! WHEN to Eat. Knowing WHEN to eat,is as important as knowing WHAT to eat. Our #1 problem is figuring out when to eat. Fruits are good, junk foods are bad, etc) If you’re eating healthy but still not losing weight, it’s probably your timing that’s off. If you don’t eat at the right time, it matters very little whether you eat healthy or not–because the food gets transformed into fat anyway! The #1 diet problem. Not eating when the body needs food, and then over- eating when finally eating. If you wait till your stomach is grumbling, your body is already starving (decreased energy and recovery rate). Extreme hunger is usually countered with the next diet mistake, over- eating, which increases fat storage. One mistake usually leads to the other, putting your body in a vicious cycle of starvation (decreased metabolism) followed by periods of over- eating (fat gain). Good diet plan of 6 meals a daysmaller meals keep you energized and full throughout the daysnacks keep you from starving during long workouts and in between mealssmaller meals keep your metabolism high while avoiding over- eating. Eating smaller meals more closely matches your body’s energy use. Your biggest meals are in the mornings and the one before your workout. Smaller meals keep you satisfied without putting extra calories into you. Small Meals a Day. Eating 5 to 6 small meals a day is the best advice I can give and it really works. Boxers looking to make weight follow this religiously. Every friend I’ve had that lost 5. If there is anything you learn from reading this guide, let it be this one: Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day! My friend explained meal- timing in these simple terms: Start eating before you get too hungry. Stop eating before you get too full. Biggest Meal in the Morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s the first supply of nutrients for your day and kickstarts your body’s metabolism. Once you have a full breakfast, you can make it through the rest of the day on smaller meals to avoid getting hungry. Don’t be silly and skip breakfast as part of your weight loss plan. This leaves you hungry and sends your body into starvation mode (decreasing metabolism), making it stingy for energy and storing everything you eat as fat. You You need to have energy to start your day; you need to eat good breakfast. Breakfast AFTER Your Morning Run. If you do your runs in the morning, it’s best to eat breakfast after that. First off, running on a full stomach is a terrible idea. Secondly, running on an empty stomach helps you lose weight because your body will be burning off stored fat instead of the food you ate that day. It’s not necessary to do your runs in the morning, but the common belief is that it burns off fat stored from the previous night and energizes you for the day. The Pre- Workout Meal. Aside from breakfast, the workout meal is the second and only other big meal on your training day. It has to fuel your intense workout without going overboard and storing fat. You should eat 2 hours before the workout. The workout meal should be big enough to sustain your whole workout. If you’re doing a 3. If you’re like me and spend 5 hours sweating non- stop in the gym, you need a big meal. Eat light foods so that you’re not training with a half a steak still digesting in your stomach. Eating within 3. 0 minutes of your workout triggers your body’s recovery phase immediately. A boxer needs only 2 big meals a day at most; One for breakfast and another 2 hours before training. NOTE: if your workout comes early in the day, it is possible to have just one big meal. You would use the same big meal as your breakfast and pre- workout meal. Smallest Meals at Night. Later meals in the day should be kept small so that you’re not going to bed starving, but also not sleeping with unused calories. Eating before sleeping is one of the easiest ways to get fat. Your biggest meals (like breakfast and before workout) come earlier so that you have all day to burn off the calories. WHAT to Eat. This is probably the most common subject of dieting. What should I eat? The nutrients you need in large quantities are: water (essential, vital to living)carbs (for energy)protein (muscle growth & recovery)fats (vital to organs, secondary energy source)Then comes nutrients you need in small quantities: vitamins & minerals (boost immune system, support cell growth, organ functions, healthy skin, strong bones)fiber (move food through digestive system, keeps your digestive system running smoothly–helps you eat less)Basically, you need everything. Eating a wide variety of foods is key to proper functioning, growth, repair, and maintenance of your body. Deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances in diet will lead to reduced physical performance, illness, and many other negative impacts on health. Now let’s review the different types of nutrients: Water. Water is the most vital substance in your body; you need water to live. Over 5. 0% of your body weight is made up of water. From an athletic standpoint, you need water to replace fluids lost through sweating. Water: transports oxygen & nutrientsremoves waste & toxinsregulates body temperaturefacilitates digestionendless more important bodily functions. It’s no surprise that you will die sooner from dehydration than from starvation. You must drink water all the time. There is no substitute for water, not even Powerade. I recommend serious boxers to drink 2- 3 gallons of water per day, spread out into 1 cup every hour, starting with one right when you wake up and ending with one right before you go to bed.
